Tips to Bettering your Salesmanship

Article by Justin Kander

Newbies to the sales world will soon understand how difficult it can be. You may spend hours on a presentation or conversation with multiple customers or even just one, and get nothing out of it. This can be frustrating and discouraging, but do not worry too much. In order to become a successful salesman, you need experience, the one thing that is worth more than any knowledge you can acquire. The more you try to sell, the better at it you will get.

As you are exposed to more and more situations, you will naturally become better at adapting to them. Your face-to-face, phone, and even email skills will become sharpened by time. Perhaps the hardest skill to grow is face-to-face skills, because you have to be very articulate and presentable. Also, the clients you are facing may seem intimidating, which can hinder your presentation. Like anything else, though, experience will eliminate all obstacles you face, mainly intimidation. The more people you talk to, the more comfortable you become, until you became so charismatic you can close a sale in one step.

The value of each customer is priceless, which many salespeople today do not seem to understand. Those that do, though, are very successful. Treat every customer as if it was your only customer, and always work with them after the sale. Remember, if you treat them well even after the exchange of money, they will appreciate you and come back to make more purchases. Another benefit of good customer relationships is word-of-mouth; if the customer likes you, he will tell people about you. As a salesman, it is critical that you be genuinely liked by your clients, as this will lead to longtime sales from them and their friends.

While experience is crucial and more important than knowledge, do not underestimate the power of knowledge. Study your product down to the bone, and demonstrate to your customers the extent of your knowledge. If a customer sees that you really know what you are talking about, they are more likely to buy from you. However, you have to be careful not to seem like you are showing off, and instead find a perfect medium between ignorance and “know-it-all-ness”.

The goal of sales is to consistently be increasing your rate of sales. There is no end, there is always room for improvement. With the right combination of experience and knowledge, this is a realistic goal that is attainable through patience and hard work.
